In a career spanning more than two and a half decades, Richard has worked throughout the world as a Lighting Camera Operator / OPC / Director, and has been fortunate enough to have worked on a raft of amazing stories form Timbuktu to Phillip Island.
Richard was born in South Africa, and after completing a 3-year Diploma in Film and Television Broadcasting; he was lucky enough to complete an internship working for a High End Post Production House in Soho, London.
Working in mainstream television in the mid 1990’s helped equipped him with the tenacity and skills needed to cope with the competitive nature of mainstream broadcast environments.
Richard returned to South Africa in 1996, where he worked as an Owner Operator in Johannesburg for 12 years. In 2008 he accepted a job working for a small agency in Auckland, New Zealand where he spent a further 8 years working on a variety of Broadcast and Corporate Television Programs. In December 2016 Richard relocated with his family to Phillip Island, Victoria where he helped set up a small business with his wife.
Richard is accustomed to working with the available tools and natural light to achieve the best results in an efficient and time effective way. He has worked on shows ranging from Sesame Street to Sports Illustrated fashion shoots and the “The Amazing Race”.
He has covered political riots, controversial African elections, high profile public relations events and international product launches.
In 2005 he spent time in Ethiopia with Oprah Winfrey covering a story on Fistula and helped create global awareness by raising much-needed funds to support this worthy initiative.
Richard has also filmed an array of sporting events as an OPC and OB Camera Operator, as well as having worked as a News and Current Affairs Lighting Camera Operator on award winning hard news shows for International television stations in both South Africa and New Zealand.
Richard has the ability to adapt his shooting style according to client’s needs and the job specifics. Being a proficient editor and a Director/ Camera Operator; he shoots sequences, and tells succinct stories as opposed to just shooting images. With over 2000 + stories worth of experience he still treats every assignment with the respect it deserves.
